Our Sports Medicine Team treats a wide variety of sports-related injuries. They work directly the trainers at the local high schools and colleges to help provide the most appropriate orthopaedic care to team members.

SPECIAL NOTE: With the fall and winter sports seasons upon us, we understand that athletes (of all ages) in our community may suffer acute injuries while playing their favorite sport. We try to accommodate same-day work in appointments, when appropriate. Please call the office at (540) 434-1664 and ask for the Sports Medicine Team.

Dr. Smillie is the only Board Certified and Fellowship Trained Sports Medicine Physician in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. He also practices general orthopaedics. He completed both a sports medicine fellowship and an arthroscopy fellowship at the University of Massachusetts. He participated in the team physicians duties for the Boston Red Sox organization and Worcester Ice Cats. Dr. Smillie is the Medical Director for Bridgewater College Athletics for the 2011-12 season and provides sports medicine care for other local university and high school athletes. Dr. Smillie was the team physician for the Harrisonburg Turks for the 2011 season this summer. In his spare time, he enjoys flying, hiking, sailing, skiing, mountain biking, weight lifting and shooting sports.

SPORTS MEDICINE TEAM

Ryan Fitzgerald, DPM

Dr. Fitzgerald is a podiatric surgeon with extensive training in elective and reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle. His expertise includes minimal incision arthroscopic surgery, pediatrics, diabetic foot care, and lower extremity wound care and limb salvage. He treats athletic injuries of the foot and ankle.

Justin is a Board Certified and Licensed Physician Assistant. Justin works closely with our Orthopaedic Surgeons to treat patients with a wide range of orthopaedic problems including general pain management, back and neck pain and injuries, fractures, shoulders, and other general orthopaedic issues.

Jill is a Board Certified and Licensed Physician Assistant. She treats a wide variety of orthopaedic conditions, including osteoarthritis, fractures, sports medicine, spines and joints. She also performs cortisone, hyaluronic acid and other diagnostic injections.
